Just wanted to post a quick congratulations to the riders who were able to
find a path around the barriers to the Barton Park race. I was quite
dissapointed with the course designers upon finding a pile of rocks in the
middle of the course. What the *%$# were they thinking? But imagine my
surprise when, after having to run up a small muddy hill, I stumbled
across a concrete barrier blocking my path to the sweet, muddy taste of
success. I found myself, and other racers around me, having to dismount
our bikes and climb over these obstacles. Some stumbled, some fell, we
all slowed down. Well, not all of us. Kudos to #C256 in the men's Cat C
race. Neil Bibler I believe? You had the courage, strength, and
determination to forge a path around those barriers. Where did you
develop such incredible bike handling skills? Don't be shy now, stand
proud. After all, I saw it. I was right on you wheel, thinking I could make
the move past you. But no, I was foiled by your athletic ability and
problem solving skills. Remind me at the next race to give you a pat on
the back for a job well-done. The rest of us should learn by your
example. But you're not alone. Top prize for inginuity in the women's
field should go to Alice Pennington. You also were able to strike out from
the others. At least until spectators blocked your path, forcing you to
climb over the concrete barrier. The nerve of those folks. Perhaps people
should be barred from standing on the sidelines, drinking beer in the rain
and screaming encouragement to people they don't even know. At least
they wouldn't have to listen to the grating sound of beginners and Juniors
dragging thier bikes over those stupid obsticals. And to the course
designers, you folks suck. If I show up at another cyclocross race and find
myself forced to ride through puddles, climb over $^*!, or run up muddy
hills in my white leather shoes, I calling bicycleattorney.com.

And don't forget to congratulate the Veoshop-kitted guy in the Juniors who had an ingenious solution to the icky slippy downhill after the finsh area u-turn.  Just go way left past those stupid yellow cones so you can safely roll yourself down without getting dirty or bumped around.

and kudos to the two B's who almost went down in the soft gravel trying to get out side of the cones so they could skip the 70' puddle.

There was more than one C rider in the front of the pack on the first lap who went around the cement block. Bad karma, too bad I didn't catch their numbers.

a yes my karma has recieved quite a blow, for i.....(dramatic pause)...road right pass the barriers, it was the first lap of the C race and i was up front and half blind. i hadn't pre-road the course and in my excitement to attack the the leader i,,i,i, i  just missed the the first one ( in my best tammy fay baker). The second one was more confusing than anything  as i road around it i thought "sh*t that was barrier!!"    so please just try to understand, it was perhaps all the good that i built up that allowed me to not run into the first one, and just a dumb move missing the second.

to the Fischer Team thanx for taking care of my shades, a humbled #267 says aufwieder fahrt

I admit that on the first lap I didn't realize that I was supposed to climb the big concrete barrier because a couple of cones were down.  I had not preroad the course.  There after I did the big step up.  Basically the first lap I just followed the guy in front of me.  Perhaps some folks were just stupid and oblivious like me.  OF course I am just in the beginner class and a newbie at that so maybe there is some excuse for me.

Gotta love the stories.

You race cross races and your first thought, coming upon a barrier (wherever the cones are) is how to get around it.

Any you  C's did so after the wonderful speech we got at the start.

I hope to see you next week, at the front, slugging that beer he promised.

What?? I'm just a beginner, but hell, i already have this cross thing figured
out-- if it's in your way, get off and jump over it! Sheesh. This isn't
trials-- you don't get penalized for touching your feet to the ground.

No excuses, even if you are a C rider or a beginner.  If the course even vaguely points you toward an obstace it should be obvious that the idea is to go over it and not around it.

IF you are a junior, under 4 feet tall, and your bike weighs almost as much as you do, MAYBE we can let you slide...but no one else.

I have it on good authority that the Crusade will be offering a new category starting next week...it will be know as the "do-whatever-the-hell-you-want" category.  Start time will be 630am.  The course will consist of a big pile of cones and barriers left in the northeast field at Estacada Timber Park.

Basically, while the noble Knights of the Crusade are drinking coffee, eating doughnuts and more than likely trying to sober up, the chuckleheads who cannot seem to grasp the simple concept of staying on-course and honoring the spirit of our glorious sport can come out and chase and cheat to thier hearts' content without worry of sanction or derision for their free-form interpretations of course layout.

Not that it happened at Barton, because I saw the C's riding around the cones, but other cross races have gotten away from using the cones. It's considered "Old School" as the cones get knocked around all over the place. Stakes and tape are the norm everywhere else. A little harder to go around something if you have to break thru a string of course tape.

I wish I had enough time and manpower to stake and ribbon everything.  That way nobody could take artistic license to what was intended.

At Barton, we purposes put down no artificial barriers because the course (as it was intended anyhow) was hard enough.  It is obvious to 99% of the participants as to what the intentions of the organizers are.... what the hell are the other 1% thinking?

as for this 1% um let me think ......ops, DQ me.  its for fun

if you need a hand putting up ribbon before the next race (both barriers) i would love to help, and because i believe in fair play i have already given my number.

the fact of the matter is that the boulders i never even saw, and the large white thing didn't register as an obstacle (this was my 3rd cross race) because the other races you didnt have the chance to avoid the barriers ( it was large, no) not an excuse just what happened.although I'AM GLAD TO HAVE REACHED SUCH A LEVEL IN RACING AS TO WARRENT SUCH SARCASTIC LANGUAGE!!!!

as for mud i love mud as i love my bike, i got 8 place in the C's or i was DQed for missing the barrier, i care not...the joy was the ride and as for next week, i will jump over every cone in my way.

ps. as far as assistance in setting-up the course, thats what people do to make things better, not because it was bad but because it could have been better.  so hit me up!!! and be happy that this well organized event has so few problems that all people can write about is a couple of  knuckel heads, like little old me.. #267

If your dizzying intellect somehow can't recognize a tremendous obstacle occupying all but a tick's turd of the course, guess what, your pal, crusader of the blatantly obvious, Sarigar, will be there.  I'll make sure you know that somehow, common sense has unfortunately eluded you.  My method will also ensure that all your other buddies will recognize the fact that you need help.

I'm here fer ya.

This public service announcement has been brought to by a self appointed enforcer of the Cross Crusade, this is not a threat, but merely a promise.

Thank You

Perhaps, just perhaps, the Knights of the Crusade should view this as an opportunity. Perhaps all those free spirits who seemingly are unwilling to conform and submit to the confines of coned course are merely reaching out for help. Perhaps they can think of no other way to ask for instruction and guidance. Perhaps the Knights should encourage these neo-libertine souls to participate in course setup so that they may have adequate time to understand the concepts at play in a less stressful learning enviroment. Perhaps, with this added assistance in the mornings the Knights would be able to detail off one of their own to conduct a personalized familarization walk-through? I mean really folks, we have been a bit derisive and abusive to these innocents and their gentle childlike wonderment.

Ignorance is not innocence.  Course cutters should not be tolerated.  They are obviously mentally weak.  Any person caught bypassing a barrier should receive a healthy barrage of mental ridicule.

NO MERCY FOR THE WEAK!!!

hurting my head...

even in oxygen debt anything looking like it blocks where the cones are generally pointed is an OBSTACLE to jump or carry over.

seriously... sort it out. no tape. no extra work to set the course up.
