I seem to remember reading a post earlier this year lamenting the lack of cowbells/spectator support at the races. Somehow I have managed to talk my wife into showing up at the races and even purchased a fine quality cowbell at Rivercity bikes for her ring at the races. Rain and shine(mostly rain) she has cheered us on only to be harshly rebuked by race officials saying this was too confusing to the riders as we might think this is the bell lap . This occured on the first lap- now most of us C riders (my class) may not be the most competitive/savvy racers but I don't think that most of us were too confused to continue racing. I think that the sounds of cowbells adds to the festive atmosphere and spirit but  please don't look at my race results as proof of cowbell effects one way or the other. Now should I banish her to the outer reaches of the course(sure to be real popular with her) or press for a immediate ban on the sales of cowbells at Rivercity?

The bells should not be rung around the finish line as it can make riders think they are starting their last lap.  Sure it would not make much sense if a bell was rung as the riders were coming by at the end of the first lap... but it does make logical sense to move even 30-40 yards away... or whatever the officials say is a good distance.  Don't let these little misunderstandings put you off... I got busted for ringing a bell too close to finish as well.  It just keeps things more sane for riders and officials at that crucial area.  It is great that your wife is out there supporting you.

Cowbells are greatly welcome and I wish there were more--and
cheering in general--crowd voices seem low this year! The issue
with the cowbells is when they're rung near the finish line. If your
wife could find an exciting place to watch away from the finish line
then all would be happy. Thanks for coming out and riding and
cheering!

I rather like the idea of cowbells at a race.

Why can't the officials use something else for the last lap notification?
Like a horn? Some other unique signal that won't be confused with a
cowbell or car-horn or something.

And I was witness to a woman being very snotty to an official who just asked her not to ring the bell near the finish. "Are you sure?" asked the woman incredulously.

My point being that officials (who VOLUNTEER by the way) have a very tough job. We can all try to help by spreading the word and introducing the ways of the crusade to newcomers.

The bell rule is really very simple and not by any means a wet rag on the festivities. Just don't ring it near the start finish, that's all. And shoot, if you are restricting your viewing to the start finish area, you are missing out a whole lotta fun.

One word: GONG! Anybody have an extra one laying around? I use mine on a daily basis during humorous interludes, otherwise I'd lend it.

As they say, "more cowbell".

I have a fever and the only prescription is more

COWBELL!

When some official getting in my face about my cowbell, I go whatever and ring my cowbell louder.

An official saying no, really means yes.

Play this baby!  You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you did not play the hell out of it. http://www.odeo.com/audio/62361/view

In my family you do one of 2 things when it comes time to race cross.

1. You race or,

2. You ring the cowbell.

I loved that song!

What's more, "More Cowbell"'s little buddy icon photo was perfectly in tune with the beat, thus making a mini music video.  Fantastic.

The cowbells rock. As far as from a racing standdpoint, where the heck is the lapcounter at the finishline??? It's there for the Tabor series and it is the best way for a rider to know where they are at if they have trouble counting to 10..

A visual display of the laps left is the least confusing way to now when you are done. That way the bell ringer is not resonsible for ringing the bell for the entire last lap...

The end is nigh!
The cowbell reminds us of imminent endings. Cowbells in all locations at all times remind us that the rapture is ever nearer, and that every lap may be our last.
