2019 Cyclocross Crusade – The Art of Cyclocross
This year’s poster, a Rick Potestio original, celebrates the beautiful sport of cyclocross. We continue the team competitions this season with this theme – The Art of Cyclocross!
Win the Coveted Prize– the Venue Flag! We are challenging all teams to participate in fun-filled art contests at each race venue as described below. The honorable and eminently bribable judges are The Cyclocross Crusade Crew. We encourage teams to proudly hang their prized venue flags (from previous years, as well) from their team tent.
Alpenrose Dairy Races 1 & 2 (USAC sanctioned races both days)
Cyclocross Course Side Art
We want to see how creative your team can be by creating an original art installation and displaying it at your team tent, or carefully placing it along the course. Be sure to put a plaque on the art so we know which team to score. If your art is course-side, please alert one of the crew members as to the location, so it is not missed during the judging.
You may place your art during the team tent set-up on Friday from 3-5:30pm or day of race. Please do not impede any part of the race course, be respectful of the competitive racing this weekend and don’t place anything that may endanger any racers.
Judging will finish on Sunday, Oct. 6th at 2pm and the winning team will be announced at 4:15 at the top of the velodrome behind the bleachers.
Cascade Locks Race 3
Best Instagram Video Cut
Upload a 1 minute video from the Alpenrose race weekend to your team’s (or someone on your team) Instagram feed using these three hashtags: #cyclocross #crosscrusade #theartofcyclocross and tag @cyclocrosscrusade in the post. Videos must be posted to Instagram by end of day Friday, October 11th for consideration. The judges will pick their favorites and the winner of the venue flag will be announced at 4:15 at the finish line. Honorable mention for 2nd and 3rd place!
Heron Lakes, PIR Race 4
Artists have long painted outdoors, but how many artists have painted en plein air at a cyclocross race? Rick Potestio, our resident artist and founder of the Cyclocross Crusade, will have his studio set up on-site. Come paint alongside a great, or set up your own studio space at your team tent. Although the traditional and well-established method of painting en plein air incorporates the use of oil paint, watercolor is the medium of choice at Heron Lakes. There is no water on-site (unless it rains) so please plan your art supplies accordingly! Bring your entries to the Cyclocross Crusade tent in the expo by 2:00 for judging. Be sure you include a label with your team name for easy identification. Winner will be announced at 4:15 at the Crusade tent.
Deschutes Brewery Race 6
Performance Art Festival
It’s tradition! Costumes are the theme for our Bend weekend! The official costume race is Sunday. Judges will be voting on best team costumes… that incorporates performance art! The winning team will receive the coveted venue flag! Teams should plan to demonstrate/perform their team costume near the finish line.
A sign up sheet to participate will be at registration on Saturday. The time slots available will be during the course breaks. Time limit for each team performance is 2 minutes.
Individual costumes will be judged throughout the day as in the past, with one winner from each race heat receiving a prize. Bonus points for handmade costumes!
Rainier High School Race 7
“Haiku” is a traditional form of Japanese poetry which consists of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. 5-7-5. Your team’s Haiku poetry may be posted anywhere along the course. Please be sure to put your team name on the poems and make sure your poem is large enough that participants can enjoy it while on course. Judges will finish scoring at 2pm and winner will be announced at 4:15 at the finish line.
Barton Park Race 8
Show us your best images from previous races this season! We will have a covered area in the expo for you to display your photos. Please bring prints or an album to share. Judging will finish at 2pm and the winner will be announced at 4:15 at the finish line.
